Fall Fly Fishing in and around Glenwood Springs, Colorado

Overnight summer has left and fall has arrived. Some of our favorite fishing is in the fall. For many reasons: Crowds are down, temperatures are perfect, colors are outstanding, and most of all the fish are very hungry getting ready for winter. With day time temperatures hovering around room temperatures, there is that special crispness in the air.

Pre spawn browns and throwing streamers are a favorite for our guides and clients. The morning streamer bite is fabulous and with cloud cover it can last all day. Many LARGE Browns only want to eat fish so this is our opportunity to take advantage of this situation.

Cooler evenings makes the water cooler and our hatches kick back into gear. Red Quills, baetis, caddis and the steroid Pale Morning Duns show themselves throughout the day. Nymphing is the most productive, but a day with cloud cover can provide many dry fly opportunities. Let’s not forget about grasshoppers that are fully grown and Browns and whitefish letting loose of their eggs. These are huge sources of protein for our trout. We think all those rainbows can already smell the eggs that are soon to come, and they’ll be all over them in the next two months.

Our fishing is fantastic and will only get better every week until late November. Come November and December the days get shorter and maximizing the heat of the day gets action like no other.
